Hi,
yesterday, i got the invitation from rockmeit to test their new browser, so, here i bring you a review from my experience with it.
What is RockMeIt?
RockMeIt is a browser, based on chrome, focused in the social networks. different from the normal browser, their interface has been changed integrating services as facebook and twitter, to get/set update to those social networks. the purpose of this browser is to make the share of content more easy for the user.
Installation
RockMeIt comes in a small installer of 500kb (windows version, there is also a mac version available), that after you open it, start downloading the browser itself and install it.
after the normal installation process you get a facebook login form. this is why rockmeit depends from a facebook app to make work their addons, so you need to login into your account and allow the access of the app to your personal data. after that, the browser start normally and you are ready to use it.

Hi,
recently i saw several new linux powered distributions come up oriented for the end-user, so i wanted to test them to see if the linux OS made some progress in the way to get closer to the common user, those users that just know how to turn on the computer, send a email and check their facebook. between those new distributions, are the ubuntu netbook with the unity interface, meego and jolicloud, that has been a while with us and i wanted to make a test today. i tried to test the other 2 this days but none of them worked on a virtual machine, so when i have some time to try it in a real computer, i get it tested.
What is jolicloud
Jolicloud is a linux based operating system, oriented to the web services. the aim of the os is to make the use of a computer painless and easy to use, and also make it full integrated to the web, with integration with facebook, twitter, google, dropbox etc..
after the jump can see the rest

Hi,
some thing i like when i work is to make checklists with the things that needed to be done. some time ago my boss give me some check lists in paper, and was fun to take notes there and check the items that was done, it seems to be faster for me for some reason. the thing is that the paper have run out and i didn’t find something similar. so my PM discovered The Big Picture . is a web app that let your create list of things with check boxes in something like a desktop, where you can move whatever you want the lists to use them. also you can group the lists in projects, so is more easy to handle. the app also have the feature to send invites, so the users can also work on the lists of the projects, and all is in real time (you can see when the user is writing or checking a list item). the system allows you also to convert that items list/elements into events, scheduled in a specific date.
is a useful (at least for me) software that let me keep record of the things i made and share it with my workgroup. the usability is very good and friendly, minimalistic. the only thing against is that is made in flash, and in linux you know, it stucks some times, but is manageable.
if you want, can see a video of his features here.
i encourage you to try it and let me know
(the signup is free BTW)

Hi,
recently, in the work, we brought a VPS at linode.com basically to use it for test server (we have some shared accounts also for this purpose, but some of our scripts use a full pat on the root of the HD, so a shared account is not possible) and i wanted to share some first impressions about their service.
we brought plan linode 512 that consist in a vps with 512 mb of ram, 16gb of hard disk, 200gb of transfer per month, with 1 dedicated ip.
Features and Control Panel
of course, as a VPS, you have a ssh access to the server, where you can perform any operation with your designated resources, but also linode give you a control panel with several extra features that i need to say, i found very useful and practical.
Basically when you buy a linode, you are buying resources and those resources you can use them as you wish, with the tools that the control panel provide. the first time you log in, the control panel guide you to the process of installing a linux distribution and installing a HD schema. they provide pre-made linux images called StackScript, that with a few clicks you can have several standard configurations, as a LAMP server, a rails server etc.. i tried the LAMP server and it worked flawless really. at today, the support the most famous distributions, including debian, ubuntu and centos.
the web admin, also provide the feature to have several configuration profiles, that let your boot the vps with different kernel version, HD schema, amount of memory available and network configuration. the usability of the web admin is really good, you have direct access to the most important items as DNS configuration, profiles etc.. and graphs of the network, I/O and CPU uses by hours, and the total used of bandwidth in the current month.
Reverse DNS
this is some of the most valuable features i think also, the correct configuration of a DNS is really a painful job (i say it by experience) and linode make it easy in this case. basically they provide you of the complete DNS service, where you can add and edit zones for your VPS and even create slaves zones, that will be following your master DNS settings in your own DNS server. the setup is simple to use, with instructions in each step and field to fill, that fits for experts and newbies.
Conclusion
i tried other vps service, including the godaddy and vpslink.com, i didn’t see in they web panel’s a useful one really, most of the task needed to be done in ssh and they do not offer those dns features that linode have. i think is a good vps service for small/medium projects, that let you have a server working in a few hours (remember that still is needed to install a mail server and ftp server is most web servers, and that takes time). unfortunately i’m unable to make a performance test, as this is a test server and almost do not have traffic.
i hope this help you in some way

Hi,
recently, i brought a android phone (a motorola backflip more exactly) so, i will be making some app reviews for my fellows developers and users
.
today i’m bringing you an app to make ssh connection with the phone, called Connect Bot.
i know what you are thinking, that is a pain in the ass to use ssh in a phone, and you are probably right, but if you are in charge to have some servers up and running, you should be able to fix it from anywhere right? and a ssh connection is essential for the server admin work. the app is really simple. have a bookmark of connection, letting you specify the user@ip:port and connect. if you have a physical keyboard as me, is more easy to use, usually the virtual keyboard is a pain in the ass when you need to type fast. in overall is just a simply ssh console, with the add that have the control and alt keys as virtual keys on the screen, that popup when you tap on it. very useful when you need to edit documents with nano. also, it let you have several ssh sessions at the same time and switch from them.
even that the app works almost flawless, it have some annoying bugs that i think need to be solved as soon as possible:
* you can’t popup the symbols and the icon for the keyboard on the screen do not work. this could be a simple thing, but is a pain in the ass when you need to go back from the app, write a underscore somewhere, copy it and then paste it on the console why you can popup the symbol or the virtual keyboard.
*if the command takes too much time, the session hang up, anyway, i need to check if this is not a problem that can be solved from the server, enabling the keepAlive directive.
*you can’t copy text from the console.
if you want to try it, just scan with Barcode Scanner this qrCode below, will take you to the market to download the app

Hi,
i really like the small distributions of linux, i think they can offer a lot of useful features for that admin or power user in a fast way and consuming a lot of little resources.
this time i going to write a review of this distribution called Tiny Core. the iso only weight 10 MB and is focused to bring the most basic graphic environment. and when i say basic, i mean really basic, the desktop don’t have anything more that the essential tools to mount drives, make USB installation, and make basic administration tasks. anyway as any linux have a terminal where you can make most of the things.
i wasn’t able to test it as i tested it on a virtual machine but the hardware support is poor as the intention is to offer the most basic installation possible. anyway it brings a GUI package manager where you have available the most common apps and libraries.
there is anything else to say really, is a distribution for experienced users that could be a base for any interesting project as a base, with enough time to find , install, customize and compile any driver or software needed. also could be good as a rescue distribution for an old USB or disk, as it boots really fast (less than 2 seconds). anyway in this matter i will choose better a more hardware compatible distribution.
